The SBD not only strives to promote all aspects of the diamond industry in Belgium and beyond but also combats abuses and unacceptable situations. It upholds the interests of its members in a wide range of areas, including welfare and legal issues, taxation, economic issues and technology.

The principal aims of the SBD are to:
• represent its members within various equal-representation and consultation bodies, namely the Joint Committee for the Diamond Industry and Trade, the Internal Compensation Fund for the Diamond Sector, the Diamond Industry Fund and the National Paid-Leave Fund;
• manage relations and represent its members at international level (International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA)) and European level (European Council of Diamond Manufacturers (ECDM));
• protect its members' interests vis-à-vis the public authorities and other partners and contacts, including De Beers, BHP, Rio Tinto, Alrosa and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC);
• manage the Scientific and Technical Research Centre (WTOCD);
• launch initiatives to promote training and employment in the sector.
